THE HISTORY of ANAESTHESIA by Alan Kershaw.
Anaesthesia is one of the least understood medical disciplines and has a documented history of
over 2000 years. It used to be called “the little death”. The talk, which includes some sound
clips, takes us from ancient practitioners through the innovations of the 1800s and 1930s to the
cutting edge practice of today.
Alan gave his first anaesthetics in 1979, using ether, and retired from active anaesthetic
practice in 2019, and returned to Intensive Care during Covid. He has worked for the charity
Mercy Ships for 10 years.

Paul was born deaf, but has had an amazing life; obtaining a degree, founding the charity
“Music and the Deaf” and giving signed theatre performances of many musicals and the Proms.

Alan says this illustrated talk could almost be described as a poor man’s Michael Palin.Alan is a
retired Leeds teacher and is now a Leeds tour guide and Chair of The Friends of Beckett Street
Cemetery near St James’s Hospital in Leeds.

WALKING THE YORKSHIRE WOLDS WAY by Paula Connelly.
The talk follows Paula’s completion of the Wolds Way, from the banks of the Humber to Filey.
Following a brief introduction to the Wolds Way, Paula guides us along the 79 mile walk, visiting
key highlights, including historical sites, nature and a few notable pubs.
Paula is a keen walker, published photographer and writer. She has walked extensively in the
North of England, and has completed several long distance trails.
