NEW CARERS SUPPORT GROUP IN ELLAND

Together for Wellbeing is a new monthly support group for carers and families of people with memory loss or dementia.

This group is run by Calderdale-based home care provider Home Instead and supported by the Calder & Ryburn Primary Care Network.

We meet from 10.30am to 12.30pm on the 4th Wednesday of every month at the Project Colt Café in Elland and aim to provide a relaxed and welcoming space where visitors can:

  • Meet others who understand the challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia.
  • Access advice, guidance, and emotional support from healthcare and dementia professionals.
  • Enjoy a friendly chat andrefreshments in a supportive environment.
  • Learn more about dementia and the support options available.

Although this is primarily a Carer’s Group, carers/families are welcome to bring the person they care for along with them.

Our second meeting is on Wednesday 28 January.  The Project Colt Cafe can be found inside Bridgefield Mills on Elland Bridge, HX5 0SQ.

Parking is available alongside and behind the mill or if its busy opposite along an unmetalled track off Elland Bridge. Alternatively there is parking a short walk away on the roadside on Briggate around the bend from Elland Bridge towards Elland centre.

Please do forward this email to any of your contacts who may be interested in attending.

If you have any questions or need more details, please do get in touch – my details are below or see this web page for a list of future meeting dates.

Calder Quilters News (Updated October 2025)

CHALLENGE FOR QUILTERS

Calderdale Quilters had a challenge to make a quilt representating the months of the year, these were the results. Excellent work.

JULY WORKSHOP

We had a workshop in July making a small wall hanging depicting a circle of houses. The day was enjoyed by all taking part.

CALDER QUILTERS HELP MACMILLAN NURSES.

The group were given fabric books that had curtain and furnishings samples. After much thought ,this waste was turned into something useful, bags for the MacMillan Nurses Personal Effects Bags appeal. Well done the Calder Quilters .

DECEMBER MEETING GIFT EXCHANGE

Calder Quilters enjoyed  their December Meeting ..mince pies and gift exchanges are always a delight. The Annual Show and Tell of quilts and Christmas decorations was stunning ..it was a true reflection of members skills. The members also brought their quilts that had been made for local charities. These quilts have been delivered to Lighthouse ( aimed at babies and children)and Homeinstead ( the elderly).
The members of the group send Seasons Greetings to who attend the wonderful MJCentre.

Calder Quilters Annual Trip 2024

On Saturday 31st August Calder Quilters went on their Annual Trip. This year The Great Northern Quilt Show was held at Doncaster Racecourse. After a straightforward journey the members alighted the coach to a day of viewing quilts, browsing useful sewing items, purchasing needed fabric ,reconsidering the next Project and coffee…with the odd cake.
The added bonus this year was hunting down and finding the seven quilts exhibited by our own members. They included titles such as “ Love is a Work of Heart “ and “Pennies from Heaven”.
An enjoyable day all round….we will be planning next year’s trip ….for our members and their friends .

Friends of the Maurice Jagger Centre

BECOME A FRIEND

The Maurice Jagger Centre was established in early 1982 to support the less able and those looking for companionship living in the Calderdale area.  We are a self funding charity and we raise all the money to run the Centre which costs circa £75,000 per annum. The only exception is an annual Ward Forum Grant of £500, which we have been fortunate enough to receive for the past few years, although this is not guaranteed.  We do this by running lunch clubs every Wednesday and Thursday, organising fund raising events throughout the year, raffles, and hiring out the building to other support Groups.

We are looking for Friends to help us continue to provide and expand our services.

Friends of The Maurice Jagger Centre: –

  • will be kept up-to-date with our presentation displayed weekly during the lunch clubs and by keeping our Website and FB page up to date
  • can get involved with our activities, for example helping us run the fundraising events
  • 50% reduction for the Xmas Lunches for Lunch Club members
  • 20% reduction for tickets to the fund raising events
  • know that they are directly helping local people who are lonely or less able.

You can become a Friend by simply committing to a regular payment (of whatever sum you choose). All you need to do is complete 2 forms, an application form which incorporates the instruction to your bank and a Gift Aid Declaration, both obtainable from the Administration Office. Gift Aid Declaration can boost your donation by 25p in the£1. You can also contact the Centre via the Contact Us page and we can send out the forms via e mail for completion and return.

 Thank You!

With your support we can continue to support the people of Calderdale into the future for another 40 years

Wednesday & Thursday Lunch Club

The MJC runs a Lunch Club every Wednesday and Thursday with the exception of 6 weeks a year when we give our hard working volunteers a break. See the Key Dates Page for the weeks Lunches are not served. The cost of the lunch is £6 for a 3 course lunch consisting of soup, a main course, desert and tea/coffee. We run a raffle each day to raise funds which helps subsidise our excellent value for money meals. We have an experienced cook, a 5 star Hygiene rating, and shop locally to support the local businesses of Calderdale. It is not a drop in lunch club so you will need to book to get a regular slot on one of our tables. While at the Centre why not browse our Bric a Brac, Books, Clothes, Greetings Cards which are on display. All items are available for a small donation to the Charity.
